Halloween is just around the corner, and today I thought I’d share with you one of my favorite spooky cocktail recipes! This recipe has been passed down by my mother, which is why I’ve lovingly named it the Hecate cocktail. Hecate is the mother of all witches!

I’ve hosted a Halloween party every year since 1981, ever since I had my first daughter, Padma, on Halloween night in 1980. They sawed me open like Leatherface at the hospital, but it’s been nothing but treats ever since!
At first, the parties started off small, just a few neighbors and my sister Janette, but as the years went on, more and more folks from the neighborhood just started showing up to celebrate in our garage. Here’s a picture from 1987 of me, my son Toby, and my nephew Carl. Those kids always did have the best costumes.
Even now that my kids are fully grown (two of them with kids of their own), they still come over every single year to celebrate Halloween. Padma even flies home from LA! Because most of my kids travel far to spend the holiday with Shelly and I (except for Toby, since he’s home now), we do our best to make each and every Halloween party a night to remember. Beyond the decor and snacks, I think a good Halloween cocktail can really make the night.
About this Recipe:
Now I mentioned at the start of this post that this recipe has been passed down to me from my mom. In 1978, I dropped out of high school with my mom to spend some time farming on a commune in Guyana. I look back on this time fondly! The work was meaningful, and I definitely didn’t miss any of my high school bullies. The climate was warm and comfortable, even in the winter. And even better, everything was community driven, and the folks on our commune came from all different walks of life. I loved learning about different people’s lives, and coming together under a shared faith. We even had our own basketball team!
One afternoon, my mom gave me a mocktail version of this recipe. Although it wasn’t yet themed to Halloween, I thought it tasted delicious. The grape flavor made it irresistible and refreshing in the heat of the day. It was sweet and crisp, and though I made some changes to the original recipe, I can still remember how it tasted!
My mom was sober and I was underaged, so we indulged in this beverage alcohol free. But let me tell you, this drink is strong. So strong in fact that 900 of our other friends at the commune completely blacked out! Talk about a party foul!
Shortly after this recipe was created, my mom and I moved back to New York where I was placed into the care of my grandparents – only for 6 months as I was 17 at the time. But once I turned 18, my mom and I spent time together often, sometimes even enjoying this drink together with a splash of vodka. Now, I’ve brought it back in full swing for this year’s Halloween Bash!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe:
- Trader Joes: It wouldn’t be a Best of TJ’s recipe without mentioning my love for this brand. You can get a majority of the ingredients for this cocktail at Trader Joe’s, though you’ll still need to visit a liquor store for the Booze.
- Flavor Aid: While this can be subbed for gatorade, Flavor Aid gives it a more subtle and balanced flavor. However, feel free to use Gatorade if you can’t find Flavor Aid at your local grocer.
- Spooky Vibes: This recipe is only as good as its presentation. Get creative by messing with different ways to garnish it. I’ll give you a few ideas below.
- Flexible Recipe: One of the best parts of this recipe is that you can easily make it non-alcoholic by simply leaving out the vodka. It’s great for kids and adults alike!
Ideas for Garnishing:
The presentation for this one can really take it over the top. Here are a few of my favorite ideas for jazzing up this recipe!
- Edible Glitter – This adds sparkle and depth to the cocktail. It’s an effortless way to pretty up any drink recipe!
- Torched Rosemary – A few sprigs of fresh rosemary not only make this cocktail look ravishing, but also can give it an incredible earthy flavor.
- Blackberry Skewer- Consider adding a few berries to a toothpick for an easy and tasty garnish.
- Candied orange peel- There’s something so fun and witchy about dried fruit.
- Blueberry “Eyeball” Ice Cubes: To make these trendy cubes, simple place a blueberry into the center of a circular ice cube mold, add water and freeze!
Tools and Preparation:
You’ll need a few tools to make this recipe. Here’s the scoop:
- Cocktail shaker – To shake up the alcohol, Flavor Aid, Muddled Berries and Fresh Herbs
- Cocktail glass – For Serving
- Strainer – To strain out the herbs. Some cocktail shakers have a strainer built in!
